Women's Reproductive Rights

Position Statement

"Reproductive rights rest on the recognition of the basic right of all couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have the information and means to do so, and the right to attain the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health. They also include the right of all to make decisions concerning reproduction free of discrimination, coercion and violence.”   World Health Organization

Because all people are entitled to have control over their lives and their general health, which includes their reproductive health, the Reproductive Rights Issues Team will advocate for:

*  Access to affordable reproductive health care services

*  Medically accurate and comprehensive sex education that includes information on both abstinence and contraception (This does not include abstinence only programs.)

*  Access to medically accurate information regarding contraception choices, including access to contraceptives

*  Reduction in the number of unwanted pregnancies, especially in the teen population

*  Sexually transmitted infections prevention and screening

*  Access to screening for sexually transmitted infections

*  Education to help prevent sexually transmitted infections

*  Guaranteed access to emergency contraception for sexual assault victims

*  Contraception coverage through health insurance plans

*  The right to safe and legal abortion
