IRAQ ISSUES TEAM

STOP FUNDING FOR IRAQ WAR

ACTIONEAM

Contact your Congressional Representative and both Ohio Senators and urge them to vote only for bills that provide funding solely to re-deploy or drawn down the troops in the most immediate responsible manner possible.

Senator Voinovich is a special target, as he may be open to changing his previous votes and willing to support some kind of compromise legislation.  We want to push him to stop funding the war.

DESCRIPTION

In September Congress will be debating several bills regarding funding the Iraq war.  One of these is the bill to provide all Defense Authorization Act which provides all funding for all defense purposes and another is a supplemental bill to provide an additional $50 billion for Iraq.  These bills will contain multiple components but their main thrust is to continue funding for the war in Iraq.  The power of the purse is the one sure measure that Congress possesses to set a new course in Iraq.

TALKING POINTS

  • Iraq will not be “solved” by military action, but rather by political action by the Iraqis themselves.  U.S. military intervention allows the Iraqis to avoid developing their own consensus.  American lives and resources are being spent on a civil war that we cannot resolve.
  • The majority of Americans and the majority of Iraqis want the U.S. forces out of Iraq.
  • While we are occupied in Iraq we are not able to go after terrorists in Afghanistan and in other parts of the world.  We are making ourselves less safe from terrorism.
  • After four years of death and destruction we are no closer to leaving now than the day we went into Iraq.
  • Funding should only be provided for a safe and responsible withdrawal and re-deployment of our forces.

MORE INFORMATION

Here is an open letter from members of Congress to the President regarding their stand on no more funding for the war.
